Our 2006 Drive was held May 4 - 7 which turned out to be quite a wonderful four day weekend full of sunshine, blue skies, and mid to upper 60 degree temperatures. A special thanks to our hundreds of volunteers... brother Knights, their families, friends, and Special Olympics special guest volunteers! Without their love, compassion, and desire to serve, this event would not be a success.

2005 Tootsie Roll Campaign News UPDATE!

October 2005

Proceeds from the Fifth Annual Tootsie Roll Drive were distributed LOCALLY to three worthwhile organizations: Hendricks County Special Olympics, Sycamore Rehabilitative Services, and SPRED (SPecial Religious EDucation) for children and adults with developmemtal disabilities or learning problems.

There is a phrase that you get back so much more than what you give when you give from the heart. The Tootsie Roll drive takes that phrase and blows it away exponentially!
Tootsie Roll Campaign Co-chair Rich ''Lazarus'' Mroz, Athlete Eric Spurling, Athlete Kelli Mullins, Hendricks County Special Olympics President Tom Mullins, and GK Mike ''Big Cat'' Worden at check presentation ceremony Sep 19, 2005.

Athlete Eric Spurling accepets a check from Grand Knight Mike ''Big Cat'' Worden as Tootsie Roll Campaign Co-chair Rich ''Lazarus'' Mroz, Athlete Kelli Mullins, and Hendricks County Special Olympics President Tom Mullins enjoy the special moment.

Who would have ever thought that Special Olympics would have presented a plaque of appreciation to our council? I was certain that Athlete Kelli Mullins was going to show us an award she won in a recent event, but I never expected our council to be honored for our support. We deeply appreciate and accept their thanks and gratitude. President of Hendricks County Special Olympics Tom Mullins said so many things that evening that touched my heart. I will never forget his story of his experience in an inflatable moon-walk during a backyard party with several Special Olympics athletes in attendance. He said that when all the kids piled on top of him all you could hear was laughter and giggles, and the only thing there was joy and happiness. For during that moment there were no handicaps, and all individuals present were God's children, enjoying the gift of life as God intended. WOW! I am still awestruck with the truth in this story. How true, indeed.

SPRED is designed to meet the spiritual needs of persons with special needs. It is a small community of faith specifically formed to welcome persons with developmental disabilities. Their goal is to welcome all participants to develop or deepen the awareness of God in their lives, of themselves as persons of dignity who are loved by God, and of themselves as an integral part of their parish community and the entire church. Ronnie Wylde, Director of SPRED, said that their funds are limited and they struggle to find ways to pay for programs and activities for their participants. This past year SPRED used the majority of their Tootsie Roll funds to cover the cost of a spiritual retreat for many of their participants.

Sycamore Services helps persons with disabilities from cradle to adulthood through a wide variety of services including programs for children, adults, employment training and placement assistance, respite care, living services, residential services, day activities, and various transition programs. Their goal is to provide individualized training and services for persons with disabilities that enhance independence in all areas of life. Much of their funding comes in the forms of grants, and our council is proud to be able to suppliment their funding needs.

What we are doing with this Tootsie Roll Drive is helping these children of God leave their disabilities for awhile to share in the pleasures that God intends for us ALL. We help some individuals and their families in their daily lives. We help some individuals grow in their faith and their relationship with God. What greater thing can we do as Knights? It's NOT about giving away candy. Rather it is about lifting up people, our fellow human beings in need. Remember the words of Jesus Christ... 'Amen, I say to you, whatever you did for one of these least brothers of mine, you did for me.' (Mt. 25:40)

I must thank all officers of our council who support this event and allow us to do it year after year. May God bless all of our volunteers who gave of themselves to help the handicapped in our community. I pray they get something spiritually out of this event which will invigorate them to continue to do works of mercy for others in the future.

Respectfully submitted,

July 2005

It's hard to believe that the collection phase of our 2005 Tootsie Roll campaign is over. We are now verifying our totals and preparing to distribute the proceeds to our recipient organizations. Our initial collection drive this year was April 28 - May 1 at several Brownsburg, Avon, and Danville retail locations. We also had a second collection after each weekend Mass at St. Malachy on June 4 - 5. Check back here for more information as it becomes available.
CVS 2005

One amazing thing about this cause is how it touches the hearts of our membership. The proof is in the numbers. Each year this event draws near record participation by our council memebers. This year we had 91 Brother Knights (just over 40% of our total membership) join with their families, fellow parishoners, and friends of the council to staff 10 locations and 235 potential shift hours. Truly amazing! Thank you all for giving of yourselves to the handicapped of our community!

2004 Tootsie Roll Campaign Results

Fall 2004

A huge THANK you to our local merchants and volunteers who made the 2004 Tootsie Roll Drive a HUGE SUCCESS!

Once again, proceeds were distributed LOCALLY to three worthwhile organizations: Hendricks County Special Olympics, Sycamore Services (headquartered in Danville), and SPRED (SPecial Religious EDucation) for children and adults with developmemtal disabilities or learning problems.

Tom Mullins, President of the Hendricks County Special Olympics graciously thanked the council. He revealed that the majority (well over half) of their operating budget comes directly from the proceeds of our annnual Tootsie Roll Drive! That would not be possible without the help of our neighborhood merchants and dozens of volunteers.

Two of the Special Olympics athletes attended this year's check presentation ceremony and each young lady moved the audience heartfelt comments. Katie Farrell said, "When I first started Special Olympics I felt scared and shy about it. But it happened to me that I feel excited because I became very passionalte about sports. It made me stronger and I can feel it inside me. So thank you for supporting the players to do their best!".

Katie Mullins, a sophomore at Covenant Christian High School, told the audience that she has been in Special Olympics for eight years. "I do bowling, golf, swimming, and basketball. I have won Bronze, Silver, and Gold Medals. I have made many freinds at Special Olympics. It is fun. At Special Olympics I am a WINNER! Thank you for helping Special Olympics. You are very nice. I hope there will always be Special Olympics."

And Katie, we also hope and pray there will always be a Special Olympics here in Hendricks County for you for years to come. That is why our Knights of Columbus council puts on the annual Tootsie Roll Drive.

2003 Tootsie Roll Campaign Results

Summer 2003

St. Malachy Knights of Columbus Council 12540 wishes to extend our heartfelt thanks to our members, their families, our fellow parishioners at St. Malachy and Mary Queen of Peace in Danville, and our friends and generous supporters who contributed to the success of our Third Annual Tootsie Roll Campaign in Hendricks County.

The cool, rainy weather of May 2-4 did not deter our volunteers or our contributors. Once again, we continued the tradition of surpassing the amount collected in previous years. This year we collected just over $7,000.00 for the handicapped of Hendricks County. All proceeds were distributed LOCALLY to three worthwhile organizations: SPRED (SPecial Religious EDucation) for the Handicapped, Sycamore Services (headquartered in Danville), and Hendricks County Special Olympics.
